The Alberta Foster Parent Association was founded in 1974 as a registered non-profit society. The association became and continues to be a collective voice for foster parents in Alberta. It promotes and advocates for a quality foster care system. It assists local associations in fulfilling their mandates. It provides education opportunities for foster parents to assist them in providing the best possible level of care for the children who for one reason or another cannot be with their parents.

Foster Allegations Support Team

Foster Allegations Support Team

The Alberta Foster Parent Association(AFPA) formed the Foster Allegations Support Team (F.A.S.T.) in 1990 to help foster parents and their families cope with the turmoil and confusion that results when an allegation of neglect, physical, sexual or emotional abuse is made.  F.A.S.T. and the work it does is endorsed by the Alberta Foster Parents Association and Alberta Children & Youth Services.

Insurance

Insurance Program for Foster Parents

In order to access the AFPA insurance program foster parents must have proof that what they are claiming is covered under their homeowners or tenants policy. They must also have written documentation that their insurance carrier has refused to cover the damage.

Legal Assistance

Legal Assistance

The Legal Assistance Program was initiated in 2003 and developed to provide financial assistance for foster parents and their adult children when charged with a criminal offence (abuse) under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act against a foster child they have cared for or are caring for. Minor children are eligible for legal counsel through the normal Legal Aid program or by virtue of Section 11. (2) of the Young Offenders Act and cannot access this program.

Support Line

Legal Assistance

The Alberta Foster Parent Association Support Line Team is designed to provide after-hours and week-end emergency support, and advice and referral for foster families and adoptive families. The program is delivered by volunteer foster parents who have experience in fostering, a good understanding of policy and procedures, and have taken conflict resolution training.
