The Alberta Foster Parent Association was founded in 1974 as a registered non-profit society. The association became and continues to be a collective voice for foster parents in Alberta. It promotes and advocates for a quality foster care system. It assists local associations in fulfilling their mandates. It provides education opportunities for foster parents to assist them in providing the best possible level of care for the children who for one reason or another cannot be with their parents.
The association supports public awareness programs throughout the year. It provides an annual training conference for foster parents and social workers. The object of the conference is to provide education on subjects of particular interest to those who provide care for children. The association assists in the development of new programs when such programs proved to be inadequate. The association has been advocating for changes in foster care since its earliest days and continues to do so today.
Individual foster parents within the association expressed a concern for foster children about to reach the age of 18. They could no longer remain a foster child and continue their education. The association was instrumental in having Departmental policy changed with respect to foster children who reach the age of majority but would like to continue their education. This extension is for a maximum of two years.
