Alberta Foster Parent Association

The Alberta Foster Parent Association Support Line Team is designed to provide after hour and week-end emergency support, and advice and referral for foster families and adoptive families. The program is delivered by volunteer foster parents who have experience in fostering, a good understanding of policy and procedures, and have taken conflict resolution training. The Support Team members work in conjunction with professional back-up support and direction.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The Alberta Foster Parent Association Support Line Team is established to meet the following program objectives:

• To ensure foster families and adoptive families are provided with information and direction when faced with situations that do not require the support of a F.A.S.T. member.
• To enable and empower foster families and adoptive families to manage a crisis situation effectively.
• To help prevent a premature and/or unnecessary placement breakdown during a time of crisis.
  

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

• The Alberta Foster Parent Association Support Line Team intends on meeting the above objectives through the following program efforts:
• Provide support and encouragement to foster families and adoptive families when faced with a crisis other than a F.A.S.T. issue.
• Assist foster families and adoptive families to respond appropriately to a crisis situation.
• To assist foster families and adoptive families in accessing professional support and resources as may be needed.
  

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

Parenting is a twenty-four hour a day job. Foster and adoptive children frequently have exceptional needs and place incredible demands on the family. Because of this, significant difficulties can arise with a child at any time of day or night.

Having someone to consult with at a moment’s notice that you know will understand and support you, could mean the difference between an appropriate response or an inappropriate reaction, a positive resolution to a conflict or a breakdown in a child’s placement.
